Celebrate Successful SLP
Last Friday I had the honor of presenting my system’s (WCFLS) “Summer Survivor Award” to Carolyn Friedemann at little Town Hall Library in North Lake, Wisconsin. This is 15th year for the award which consists of a traveling trophy (a stuffed Kermit the Frog) and certificate which includes the phrase “it’s not easy being green…and it’s not easy working in the children’s room in the summer” or some variation thereof. The first award went to a library that hosted a llama program, wherein a large group of children was fascinated by the “flow” of the animal following a basic biological urge. The “Summer Survivor Award” has become a highlight of our end of summer youth services celebration in Waukesha County. How does your library celebrate? Please comment.

Hmm, I have to say that sounds more creative than what we do: at our library in McFarland, we give ourselves 5 or 6 weeks to recover, and then in early fall we all go out to eat, laugh and generally be merry on a Friday night (when we close at 5:30 p.m., so everyone can potentially attend). This is open to all the staff, since SLP has a considerable impact on _every_one's summer workload. Besides, if it were only for Youth Services staff, I'd be going out by myself!
Of course, after I'm done with the number-crunching, I make sure to share our record-breaking stats with everyone at the next monthly staff meeting, and by adding an entry to our staff log. I also write an "SLP Wrap-Up" that goes into the local newspaper,school & community newsletters, report to the library board, and on our website. And new this year, a congratulatory poster in the Children's Library to all the participants.
Just curious, though... How do the libraries get their summer stories to you for consideration of getting the "Summer Survival" award? Do they submit a humorously written description and in doing so, self-nominate? I'd like to know your process and contemplate how it would go over in my own library system!

Celebrating with a night out sounds grand! Sorry to say I don't have a process. We're a small System, just 16 libraries, and I try to visit each during the summer, when I'm dying to get out of the office anyway. So I usually have a pretty good feel for what's going on.
