Youth services folks at the Waukesha County Federated Library System recently awarded Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson, the WCFLS Mock Newbery Award, unaware that debate is raging about the value and relevance of the real deal. Susan Patron, author of award winner, The Higher Power of Lucky, writes about what the Newbery has meant to her as a reader, librarian and writer in the January 11, issue of the Los Angeles Times.
