Who Says Boys Don't Love Reading

This video, courtesy of Sue Abrahamson at the Waupaca Area Public Library, shows two fifth grade boys opening three boxes of new books.

According to Sue, "These two boys are always hounding me for what's new for them to read." So she let them find out for themselves.

Share some of your favorite stories of boys reading at your library in the comments!

That Sue! What a great idea! I can see other libraries adapt this to reward eager readers. I know its always a favorite part of my job..first to touch the new books.

I'd like to know what Ryan thought of When the Whistle Blows when he finishes it! I'm about half way through it myself. :)

We've got one guy who drives us nuts. He's one of those people who takes a mile when you give an inch--and then goes to the next person to complain that he didn't even get that inch and starts all over again... Anyway, a few months ago he admitted to me that he LOVES the Eragon series and has read the trilogy twice, and now bugs me to let him know AS SOON as I find out when the next book is coming out.

I loved this video! Some of the boys' comments were hilarious - or maybe it was their delivery.

I have a regular (preschool boy) library visitor who is totally obsessed on Thomas the Tank Engine. Just placed a book order for a whole bunch of Thomas beginning readers, so he will be in heaven when they hit the shelf.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, a high school boy who loves manga (both reading & drawing it) just recommended that I purchase the series _Death Note_ (13 vols) by Tsugumi Ohba. It's in the h.s. library & he claims it's very popular! So now I'm trying to dig up some reviews - and wondering if it's too dark for my teen GN collection.

I started a "tween favorites book club" in january which has sort of mashed with my "make it and take it crafts" tween program. I save new books that I think the tweens will especially love and show them off - and they get to take them home afterwards! and we chat about our favorite books and make crafts and sometimes have snacks. So far I just have girls though...

We got SEVEN boxes of books in one day, and the very second it arrived, my student helper said "Is Erak's Ransom in there?" I thought it probably was, so we ripped open all the boxes and were madly flinging books (carefully!) everywhere. Other students saw the commotion and had their own requests. Before the books had even warmed up from being in the UPS truck, we had (quickly stamped and tattle-taped)checked out about ten books. I only have about twenty books left from the shipment that haven't checked out, and those were later books in new series and nonfiction.
