Local and national headlines have exposed an epidemic of youth suicides as a result of bullying. What can libraries do to help build safe and supportive communities for all children? Appleton Diversity Coordinator Kathy Flores will facilitate this interactive workshop on bullying and suicide prevention, in which we will:
- Define bullying and discuss its causes and consequences;
- Explore the dynamics of bullying through interactive exercises;
- Learn about the unique risks in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community;
- Discuss why the library should get involved, and what we can do; and
- Share local and national resources on bullying and suicide prevention.
Kathy Flores has been the Diversity Coordinator for the City of Appleton since October 2009. Before working for the City of Appleton, Kathy's career included anti-violence work in Community Education as the Outreach Advocate at Harbor House Domestic Abuse Programs. She helped start Harmony Café in Appleton (a peaceful place for celebrating diversity), and in the 90's she worked at Kimberly Clark Corporation helping start the first diversity networks at KC. She is trained in suicide prevention in addition to specializing in suicide prevention work in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. In our own community, Kathy stepped forward and created an LGBT Suicide Prevention task force when we realized that three of our four teens in our county that died by suicide identified as gay or lesbian.
