This is the recipe we used. It makes a single serving. If you would like a supply list for 40 servings, please leave a comment and I will share it.
Ice Cream in a Bag
Ingredients:
· 1 tablespoon sugar, 2 if making chocolate ice cream
· ½ cup milk, cream, or half and half
· 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract OR 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder
· 6 tablespoons kosher salt or ice cream salt
· Enough ice to fill the gallon-sized bag halfway (4 cups)
· 1 gallon-sized heavy-duty freezer bag
· 2 zipper sandwich bags
Directions:
- Half fill gallon bag with ice.
- Sprinkle with salt. Salt reduces the freezing point of ice!
- Fill one sandwich bag with the ice cream ingredients and zip.
- Place it inside another sandwich bag and zip.
- Place the 2 sealed bags inside the large bag full of ice and salt. Seal.
- Shake until the ice cream is solid. It may take 5-10 minutes.
- Carefully remove inner bag from the other two.
- Enjoy your ice cream!

That's excellent. I will definitely have to try this simple recipe at my library very soon! Can you please provide a supply list for 40 people? Thanks so much!
Also, which do you prefer to make ice cream with - milk, cream or half-and-half?
We used half-and-half each time. Here is the UPDATED supply list to make 40 servings.
Ice Cream in a Bag Supply List (makes 40 servings)
20 cups of half and half (5 quarts)
2 pound bag of white sugar
1 container of cocoa powder
1 large bottles of vanilla flavoring
3-4 boxes of kosher or ice cream salt
40+ gallon sized zip freezer bags (must be heavy-duty!)
80+ pint or sandwich size zip bags
4 – 10# bags packaged ice (need 4 cups per zipper bag, so need enough for 120 cups = 2 cups per pound, so a 10 pound bag has 20 cups=5 servings)
Coolers for ice
Measuring spoons and cups
Plastic spoons for eating ice cream
Thanks a bunch=)
We hosted an ice cream program during spring break. It was lots of fun and really popular. The recipe we used was the same as Sarah's but we only had vanilla flavoring.
