Newbery to a Picture Book
How big a deal is it for a picture book to win a Newbery? A big one!
The criteria for the award specify that the book must be for children 0-14 years old. In that age range it's tough for books for the youngest to compare against the complexity and richness of plot, language, pacing and more that are found in middle school books.
I love to read what Carter Higgins, who writes the blog Design of the Picture Book, has to say about this year's wonderful winner Last Stop on Market Street. If you don't know this blog, it is worth following!
