Tween/Teen Programming Workshop

Friday, April 13
9:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Wintergreen Resort, Wisconsin Dells

Morning session: Breaking Boundaries: Serving Teens and Tweens with Chris Baker, Portage Public Library

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to serving teens and tweens - every teen & tween is unique and every community has specific assets, needs, and challenges. Despite these differences, all teens and tweens need to feel safe in neutral spaces where they feel welcomed by adults who support and believe in them. Join your colleagues and learn about ways to intentionally serve teens & tweens, create safe spaces for them, and provide experiences that allow them to be genuine and practice authentic growth.

Chris Baker is the teen services coordinator at the Portage Public Library. With over 10 years of experience in education and theater, Chris brings unique perspectives to public library service and programs for youth

Afternoon session: Unconventional Outreach: Beyond the Bookmobile with Kristi Helmkamp and Alicia Woodland, Appleton Public Library

Youth and Teen Services outreach to our communities will look much different from the past as we surge full throttle into the Information Age of the 21st century. During this session, Youth and Teen Services Librarians will learn how to use their current resources while cultivating varied outreach programs that are irresistible and impactful to their distinct communities. Presenters will share their experiences with developing responsive outreach initiatives like iPads on the Go, Booktalks in the Classroom, Reach Out and Read and more as ways to increase their library’s presence on the front lines of their community. Attendees will learn from each other and will build a sample outreach program for respective communities using a patron-motivated programming model. Unconventional Outreach will enable Youth and Teen Services Librarians to discover new ways to reach the youth of their communities despite roadblocks from funding, time constraints and space limitations.
