South Asia and Américas Book Awards Announced

The South Asia Book Awards for youth are announced annually in late spring. The awards are given to books featuring South Asian cultures that portray South Asia, the experience of individuals living in South Asia, or of South Asians living in other parts of the world.

The countries and islands that make up South Asia are: Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the region of Tibet.

The award is administered by the South Asia National Outreach Consortium (SANOC) and the award committee is made up of school and public librarians and subject experts from SANOC.

Sponsored by the national Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP), the Américas Award recognizes U.S. published children’s and young adult books that authentically and engagingly portray Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latinos in the United States.

CLACS worked with CLASP to create the award, and coordinated the Américas between 1993 and 2011. The award is currently run by Tulane University and Vanderbilt University. The awards include a list of commended titles as well.
