Kids Take Action Book Display and Resources

The Wisconsin Water Library is a great resource on STEM and environmental resources and activities. In a recent blog post they shared some of these resources focusing on kids and teens who take action for the environment. These activities and suggestions are perfect for any library to use in their youth work. And you can borrow books from their library!

They write: "Almost 25% of teenagers (ages 13-17) have participated in a school walk-out, participated in a protest, rally, or other event, or written a letter, emailed or phoned a government official in an effort to combat the climate crisis and make their voices heard. There has been an increase in participation worldwide in school climate strikes, with over 6 million students participating in September 2019."

ICYMI: A Book About Standing Rock Told From a Child's Perspective

Broaching injustice issues with children in a way they can understand isn't always the easiest task.  While an increasing number of authors and illustrators have begun tackling sensitive subjects, it's not often that you find a title told from a child's perspective that was actually written by a child.

Aslan Tudor (then 8 years old) and his family were present at Standing Rock Reservation during the 2016 conflict over the Dakota Access Pipeline.  After having time to reflect over what had happened, Aslan and his mother realized that there weren't any resources available that would help children to understand the events that took place.  

"He wanted to make a resource for younger kids to understand what happened at Standing Rock and why." - Kelly Tudor, Aslan's mother

Thus, the idea of a book was born.

Now, two years later, 10-year-old Aslan--with the help of his mother--has a published book on the market: Young Water Protectors: A Story about Standing Rock .

NOTE: I haven't had a chance to read it yet (it just came out this August) but you can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be doing so straight away when it arrives at the library!
