I had the opportunity to attend the virtual ALSC Institute recently. Among the many thoughtful learning sessions was one focusing on Muslim representation in children's books. The session, done in collaboration with the CCBC, examined the importance of knowing how much of the world population is made of Muslims and the many places around the globe Muslims live. It also focused on the depiction of Muslims in children's literature and the importance of #ownvoices.
During the session I was introduced to a wonderful resource that you may already know about: the Hijabi Librarians blog. Written by a group of Muslim school and children's librarians, this insightful blog includes reviews and articles on Muslim representation in youth books.
Their October 3, 2020 post, Evaluating
Muslims in KidLit: A Guide for Librarians, Educators and Reviewers, which coincided with the Institute, is a great basic guide to help us in evaluating our collections for Muslim representation as well as learn more about the state of Muslim representation in youth literature..
