The Scarcity Myth in Publishing

In the latest email "What's Going on at the CCBC" sent out to the Friends of the CCBC by Director KT Horning, KT shares, among other informational tidbits, a fascinating video from Linda Sue Park. Park addresses the myth that because more #ownvoices authors and illustrators are being published it has shrunk the opportunities for white book creators to be published. KT shared:

"Author Linda Sue Park often uses the CCBC’s diversity statistics when she’s talking to aspiring authors, some of whom are now complaining about how hard it is for a white author to get published now that there’s so much demand for diversity.  Last year, Linda Sue contacted us and asked us if we could make a graph for her to use that showed the breakdown of white authors vs Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and Madeline Tyner made her a graph to use in her talks to illustrate this.  Now, with the help of author/illustrator Grace Lin, she’s made a YouTube video of her talk, with Madeline’s wonderful graph animated."

Check out Linda Sue Park's brief (4:43 minutes) and powerful video busting the myth using CCBC stats!
