Newbery Award Turning 100!

The Newbery Medal is one of the oldest book awards for youth literature. It's awarded by ALA's Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) for "the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year."

Established in 1922, next year marks the 100th anniversary of this "Oscar" of the youth literature book world. This helpful ALSC Awards page gives you a bit of the story behind the awards. But why not find out more and celebrate?

Beginning in Sept, ALSC is sponsoring and collaborating on a number of free events and YOU are invited.

Free events as listed in a recent ALSC blog post include:

  • Newbery 100 Symposium on November 5: This full-day Symposium includes a lot of opportunities to learn about the history of the Newbery and its impact on children’s literature. The recordings of the symposium sessions will also be available on The Center for Children’s Books website after the live date. [WI's own KT Horning is one of the presenters!]

  • Our Spring 2022 issue of Children & Libraries will be a very special Newbery issue! ALSC members can be on the lookout for this in March."
