Throw It Thursday - Around the World

Ashley Borman, Technical Services Librarian at the Clintonville (WI) Public Library and YSS board member, is back with her monthly column and is taking a look at geography books in our collection.

This 2016, 7th edition is an outdated version
of DK’s Concise World Atlas.
While it is still in decent condition,
we have the newer edition as well.
When’s the last time you brushed up on your geography? And by that, I mean, when is the last time you actually paid attention to the geography books in your collection? Whether you are looking in children’s or adult, if you see an atlas that is more than 5 years old, Throw-It! Get it out of your library! Grab the newest edition, but get that old one out! This is especially true for road atlases. With as much as things can change in a given year, these can get outdated very quickly. And if you get such things on automatic order, why are you keeping more than the newest year?! The exception to this is, of course, historical atlases. Those are okay to keep for longer. But pay attention to the circ stats and condition. If they are getting frumpy or have no circs, start looking for something to replace them with.

Travel guides also get outdated very quickly. Replace these as new editions come out, or if you are not getting a new edition, toss them in the discard pile after about 5 years. Again, the information in travel guides can get outdated very quickly. Unless you are keeping them for historical purposes, there is no need to keep them. And it is detrimental to your patrons because you are providing poor service to them by giving them outdated materials.
