Reconsidering Thanksgiving Books

OpenClipart-Vectors from Pixabay
Abby Johnson, aka Abby the Librarian, just wrote a timely post on the ALSC blog that shares strategies to help you create a more realistic Thanksgiving book collection that doesn't rely on the myth of the Pilgrims and Native Americans. She not only shares books from an indigenous person's perspective but also strategies on additional books to include in your Thanksgiving Day collections and displays.

She writes: "Thanksgiving books are probably the most sought-after holiday books in my library. As a white librarian who strives to do less harm, Thanksgiving books give me pause. Children are still being taught the Thanksgiving myth, while some people consider Thanksgiving a day of mourning. We serve all of them as members of our community. How can we fulfill the demand for books while avoiding harmful stereotypes and misinformation?"
