YSS October 2022 Board Meeting Minutes

Youth Services Section Board Meeting

October 18, 2022

1:30pm-3:00pm 


Present: Claire Parrish, Caitlin Schaffer, Linda Jerome, Alison Loewen, Melissa Carollo, Marge Loch-Wouters, Murray Johnson, Jenny Wegener

Absent: Taylor Wilcox, Ashley Borman

Welcome 



Old Business:

  • DPI Updates -Monica and Jeni (written update)

    • Jeni Schomber and Chris Baker joined the Library Services Team in mid-September as Public Library Consultants. Jeni will attend the YSS Board meetings moving forward.

    • CSLP Manual Access 

      • To access the manual, you will need to visit the CSLP website at: www.cslpreads.org 

      • Once there, hover over the Manual Downloads button located on the menu bar. From the drop down menu, select 2023 All Together Now

      • Contact your Youth Services Liaison to get the access code. 


  • Blog Check-in - Marge 

    • Business as usual! Filled in for the next three weeks to cover for Marge. 

    • Adding job postings has been very popular. 

    • Blog post for board candidates went up before a last-minute candidate was added. Working toward getting better communication between the nominating committee and YSS Board. 

      • Current YSS policy: We have our own nomination chair (past chair position), but the overarching policy for nominating candidates is unclear. 

      • Claire will be emailing those who weren’t elected to thank them for running and will mention other ways to be involved. She will include an apology for the final candidate. 

  • Regional Meet-Ups - Murray

    • Evaluating Eau Claire - Great meet-up, but low turnout. 

    • Thinking about going back to a virtual or hybrid approach. 

    • Possible virtual meetup in early December 

    • Linda suggested bouncing between doing virtual and in-person/hybrid meet-ups. Get a better idea/more input about what members prefer. 

    • Check numbers on post-meet-up video views. 

    • Promote meet-ups on the blog by having an attendee volunteer to do a short write-up to drum up interest in the next one. 

    • Claire suggests doing the Board retreat alongside a regional meet-up in early 2023. 

  • Webinar Check In - Claire 

    • SEL Webinar - early December 

      • Milton Library committed, waiting to hear back from Waukesha PL  

    • Land Acknowledgements - On pause.

      • Hedberg librarian has pushed her event to the spring. 

      • Doing more research to see if land acknowledgements are appropriate for libraries. Making sure we are putting together a thoughtful webinar or blog post on land acknowledgements and taking action. 

  • WLA Update - Linda 

    • Working on getting people there to meet attendance goals. 

  • WLA Fall Conference Planning 

    • Social: Wednesday, 6-8pm, Dungeons and Dragons 

      • Claire and Caitlin working on blog post to update YSS members about the casual nature of the social. People had to register for table spots, but drop-ins can sit and observe, tag out with people playing, etc. 

    • Luncheon: Wednesday, 11:30-1:00pm, Kevin Henkes

      • Kevin Henkes luncheon is full. Limited to 150 seats due to space. Standing/sitting room may be available after lunch is served. 

    • Business Meeting: Thursday, 7:00am, Williams Bay Boardroom 

  • Children’s Book Award - Committee Members

    • 2023 Members - Seven applications for four openings.  

      • Claire and the chair of the book award committee will narrow them down. 

  • Updating YSS Policies - Linda

    • Linda will look at suggestions and we will discuss at a future meeting. 

  • Marketing Committee - Alison

    • Business as usual.  

New Business:

  • Homeschooling Conference request for presentation 

    • Leah Langby was contacted by a volunteer from the Wisconsin Homeschooling Parents Association. 

    • Interested in having a public librarian presence to talk at an upcoming conference in Stevens Point in May about how libraries and homeschool families can work together. 

    • Jenny W. recommended Andrea Bisordi from Delafield. Possibly sending out an email or doing a call out on the blog post. 

  • WLA booth volunteer signup sheet
