Library Gaming: Free Minecraft Knock-Offs!

Lindy Liedl from the Rice Lake Public Library returns with her monthly column on all things gaming to help you connect with your teen patrons!

Been wanting to start Minecraft programs, and everyone can’t purchase a copy of the game? There’s a few Minecraft dupes that are free to play in an Internet browser.

Bloxd.io

A free, online, multiplayer game in which players can choose a game mode in order to play together. The controls are simple for beginners and contain most of the features of the classic Minecraft game.

Paper Minecraft

Paper Minecraft is a hyper-simplified version of the game. It lets you choose between Creative and Survival modes and is laid out like a platformer-style game, meaning your viewpoint is right to left, not 3D. A fun aspect to this version is that you can see through the ground below you to get a peak at what minerals are in the ground below. I don’t think you can play with others in the same world, but I could be missing how to activate that feature. Press E on your keyboard to open your inventory and build!

Minecraft Classic

Start a randomized world that looks like the classic, original Minecraft without all the fancy updates over the years. (Some players love this aspect) It also generates a link to invite others to join the world that you’re in to play together, or you can play alone. Press B on your keyboard to open some blocks to play with. It looks like this is just a Creative builder/exploring game with no tools available, but a more experienced user might know how to access tools.

If anyone hears of similar games that are free, please let me know!
