Join the YSS "Talk About It!" Book Discussion at WLA

  

Have you ever wanted to talk more about the YSS luncheon speakers presentation or delve a bit more into her or his books?

Well, this year we have a great opportunity open to you. Plans are for Megan Schliesmann and Merri Lindgren to facilitate a discussion of two of YSS luncheon speaker Bill Konigsburg's books, Openly Straight and Porcupine of Truth. We also invite participants to share thoughts about Bill's speech from Wednesday noon. Feel free to join us whether you've read one or both books or heard Bill's talk and want to talk about it.

All this will happen on Thursday Oct 27 in the ambiance of the Canal Street Cafe (1611 W. Canal St, a short 4 minute jaunt around the corner from the Conference Center) from 7:30-8:15 pm. Food and drink are available for purchase. The discussion will segue into the annual YSS Social, a laid back opportunity to get to know and chat with lots of other youth librarians from around the state.

And the Wisconsin Winner Is...

Want to take part in making Wisconsin literary history? 

The Youth Service Section of the Wisconsin Library Association is looking for a person to serve a two-year term on the 2012 Children’s Book Award Committee.   If selected, you will be one of seven individuals who read and discuss books written for children and teens by authors and illustrators with a Wisconsin connection. 

This notable committee chooses the recipient of the Elizabeth Burr/Worzalla Award and annually selects up to ten books to receive Outstanding Achievement recognition.  To find out more about this committee, visit the WLA Children's Book Award website.

To be considered for this position, please send a brief essay to YSS Chair, Sue Abrahamson, by January 16, 2012.  Essays should identify applicant’s abilities and desire to:

·         Participate in book discussions

·         Be familiar with recent youth literature

·         Be a member of WLA/YSS

·         Work cooperatively, listen well and express opinions

·         Attend committee meetings when necessary

For those of you attending WLA this year, don't forget to check out the YSS book discussion that will be held on Thursday from 4-5:15!!!!

Take this opportunity to participate in a book discussion led by librarians from the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC). Everyone attending this session should read either Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper (Atheneum, 2010) or Bruiser by Neal Shusterman (HarperTeen, 2010) in preparation for this session. Participants will follow CCBC book discussion guidelines (www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/books/discguide.asp).
