A Day in a Youth Librarian's Life

Our guest post today is from Terri Ehle, Youth Services Coordinator at Lester Public Library in Two Rivers

Patron: “It must be nice to have a job where you can read all day…”

Daily Schedule:
  • 7:30 AM Set up story time room for story time
  • 8:00 AM Proctor exam for college student; As they work create poster for upcoming library event; Renew magazine subscriptions; Cut paper for story time craft project; Finish book order and print copies of orders for cataloger
  • 9:15 AM Pick up toys left laying out the night before; Fill holes in book displays for story time patrons; assist with
    locating a board book for the on-shelf holds list
  • 9:45 AM Greet Special Needs class who arrives early to prepare for story time; Console angry patron who also
    wants to come in early but needs to wait until library actually opens
  • 10:00 AM Greet families attending story time, assist children in finding books
  • 10:15 AM Story Time
  • 11:00 AM Clean up story time and reset meeting room for Foreign Film night; Promote upcoming events to story
    time families; Create monthly help desk schedule
  • 12:00 PM Lunch (while reading this month’s issue of School Library Journal)
  • 12:30 PM Management Team Meeting
  • 2:00 PM Open newly arrived boxes of books, mark off packing slips, sort by collection, and prepare for cataloger;
    Return phone calls about booking library meeting room; find instructions on how to make your own bouncy balls for teen program
  • 3:00 PM Present “How to use Badgerlink in your Classroom” to group of 20 teachers
  • 4:00 PM Watch recorded webinar on how common core state standards affect libraries; Interrupted to provide
    back-up reference at the Help Desk
  • 5:00 PM Go Home with a bag of books and read ‘til bed. Ahhh, finally!

What do you do to prepare books for your cataloger? I'm curious.

I make a note as to which collection each book should be added to such as Easy Fiction, Juvenile Fiction, Young Adult, etc...
