Oconomowoc Public Library           Youth Services Librarian (full-time)
Oconomowoc Public Library is seeking a full-time Youth Services Librarian. The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for supervising, planning, and coordinating all children’s services, teen’s services, and parental services to provide the most effective library services to the community. 
 
Candidate must have a master’s degree in library science (MLS Degree) and one year of library operations experience. Youth experience preferred. Competitive wages, benefits, and enrollment into the Wisconsin Retirement System. $27.85 to $31.83 per hour with ability to earn up to $35.81 in future years, depending upon experience. 
 

General Overview

Responsible for supervising, planning, and coordinating all children’s, teen’s and parental services to provide the most effective library services to the community.

 


Job Description Summary

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  1. Plan and conduct children’s activities, including story times, summer reading programs, and programs for school-age children and teens.
  2.  Prepare and conduct book talks, and presentations for schools and community groups.
  3. Prepare bibliographies for special collections and groups.
  4. Purchase materials for print, audiovisual, and Library of Things collections for children and teens.
  5. Maintain an orderly, up-to-date collection of materials for children and teens by weeding materials regularly.
  6. Supervises part-time Early Childhood Specialist/Reference Assistant and coordinate teen volunteers.
  7. Assist at reference desk as needed.
  8. Monitor behavior of patrons, taking corrective action as necessary in accordance with library policy.
  9. Serve patrons by answering questions, resolving problems, and providing guidance.
  10. Prepare displays, decorations for events, and seasonal décor.
  11. Maintain a clean, organized appearance of the library.
  12. Use quantitative and qualitative data and make recommendations regarding programs and policies.
  13. Assist marketing staff prepare content for marketing materials and maintain library’s social media accounts.
  14. Attend events and meetings with community groups and area schools, developing relationships to facilitate the incorporation of community concerns and needs into children’s programs.
  15. Interact with and provide support to library personnel to coordinate operations and provide the most effective service to the community.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

 


Summary of Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge -
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library systems and programs.
  • Knowledge of young adult and children’s authors, books and reader-interest levels; artistic and creative skills utilized in developing and conducting children’s programs.
  • Thorough knowledge of library collection classification and selection tools and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of equipment and facilities required in a comprehensive library system.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of office management, work organization, and supervision.
Skills and Abilities -
  • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to accurately classify and catalog library materials.
  • Ability to analyze and utilize a variety of reports and records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patrons, employees, supervisors, other agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to coordinate activities while attending to daily operations.
  • Ability to entertain and guide children and teens while increasing their desire to read and learn.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with community organizations, school administrators, and teachers creating a spirit of cooperation.

Additional Information

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in library science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association.
  • One (1) year experience in library operations.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience to be considered.

Special Requirements:

  • Able to work evenings and weekends when needed.
