Brooke Newberry, La Crosse Public Library, is back with her monthly column sharing recommendations on great picture books for your collection.
This month we’re focusing on books that feature consent and bodily awareness. A few newer releases, paired with some older titles, round out this list of developmentally appropriate titles for toddlers and preschoolers.
Can I Give You A Squish
Emily Nelson
Dial Books 2020
Kai, a mer-boy loves hugs. He feels terrible though when he surprises a puffer fish with a hug and he puffs up with fear. This sweet text is a great conversation starter about how to ask if someone wants a squish (hug) before greeting them.
Don’t Hug Doug: (He doesn’t Like it)
Carrie Finison
G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 2021
Doug is an ordinary kid who doesn't like hug. This funny, clever book will inform readers about consent while also providing them a lot of opportunities to get up and move their body. This book is great for storytime.
Sharee Miller
Little Brown and Co, 2018
Aria loves her hair and so does everyone else. However, some people overstep and try to touch it without her permission. This book provides a funny adventure but also talks about the importance of boundaries.
Will Ladybug Hug
Hilary Leung
Scholastic, 2018
Ladybug loves to hug, but not all of her friends feel the same. This board book is a gentle introduction to consent and the sparse text and bold illustrations make it a great choice for young toddlers.
C is for Consent
Eleanor Morrison

This board book illustrates a great depiction of what consent looks like. It provides a plethora of common examples a child might experience and provides words to use in each situation.
