Brooke's Books - Trees

Brooke Newberry, La Crosse Public Library, is back with her monthly column sharing recommendations on great picture books for your collection.

The trees are a-changin’ in Wisconsin. I thought we’d celebrate my favorite time of year by focusing on the almighty tree and the books featuring them!

Trillions of Trees

Kurt Cyrus

Henry Holt, 2021

Grab a shovel and get ready to plant some trees! From poplars to pines, alder, apple, peach, and plum, this rhyming story introduces the concept of orders of magnitude and celebrates the importance of planting different trees and preserving diverse ecosystems.

Me + Tree

Alexandria Giardino

Creative Ed, 2020

A young girl and an old tree learn from each other how to find their purpose and foster healing in the world.

My Tree

Hope Lim

Holiday House, 2021

When a young boy's beloved plum tree falls in a storm, he feels like he's lost both a friend and a connection to his old home. Before long, a new plum tree is planted, new blossoms bloom, and a new friendship takes root.

When Your Grandma Gives you a Lemon Tree

Jamie L. B. Deenihan

2019

In this imaginative take on that popular saying, a child is surprised (and disappointed) to receive a lemon tree from Grandma for her birthday. This clever story, complete with a recipe for lemonade, celebrates the pleasures of patience, hard work, nature, community . . . and putting down the electronic devices just for a while.

The Forever Tree

Tereasa Surratt and Donna Lukas

Crown, 2018

A fresh twist on Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree based on a real tree in Wisconsin that became something more, this is a timeless story about loss and renewal at home and in nature.
