Today's May YSS board meeting update is from Claire Parrish, YSS 2022 Chair and Public Services Director at Rice Lake Public Library.
May is always a quieter meeting for YSS as we are all focused on gearing up for summer. The YSS Board wants to remind ALL library staff that you’re amazing to be jumping back into whatever level of programming your library is offering after two summers of not quite normal! It's the perfect time to reflect on what we really missed and what could perhaps fade away into the abyss. No matter what your level of programming ability, you’re doing what you can! Remember that YSS and the blog are here for you to be a sounding board and source of inspiration.
The board also reflected on the recent WAPL Conference. Several of us were able to be at the conference and delighted in chatting with each other face to face while enjoying some hilariously fun board games. I know I was inspired by several of the youth services focused sessions. It was a great reminder that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel, there are plenty of wonderful things to steal from your peers!
My final note is that it’s time to start thinking about YSS Board elections! The YSS Executive Board helps to facilitate all the great things that YSS is doing in our state. Currently, we meet once a month virtually, with an in-person meeting at the WLA fall conference and a short break over the summer. While each position has its specific responsibilities, the wonderful thing about our board is that we all work together to make things happen, from the YSS regional meet-ups to the resurrection of our webinar series. If you are interested in becoming a member of the YSS Executive Board, email Jenny Wegner at jenny.r.wegener@gmail.com. You will be asked to provide a short bio including why you are interested in serving on the board. Elections will be held in the fall.
Positions open are:
Chair Elect: Acts for the Chair in case of vacancy in that office. Coordinates activities and meetings with the Chair. Plans the YSS booth at the WLA annual conference. This is a three-year position, the first year as Chair Elect, the second year as Chair and the third Year as Past Chair.
Director-at-Large (2 spots!): Serve as members of the Executive Board and are in charge of conference social planning coordination. Directors-at-Large serve a 2-year term.
