Fabulous Fall Events from CCBC!

The Cooperative Children’s Book Center of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has a number of upcoming events of interest to librarians, from Kate DiCamillo’s Charlotte Zolotow Lecture to the CCBC’s exhibit of new books at WLA and more!

·         Charlotte Zolotow Lecture Featuring Kate DiCamillo: “What Stories Have Given Me.” Thursday, October 17, 7:30 p.m., Capitol Theater, Overture Center, 201 State Street, Madison
The Charlotte Zolotow Lecture is free and open to the public. This year, the lecture is being held off-campus at Madison Overture Center’s Capitol Theater, near the top of State Street and the State Capitol.

Award-winning, much-lauded author Kate DiCamillo will be delivering the 2019 Zolotow Lecture. Among her many books for children are the novels Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tale of Despereaux, Flora & Ulysses, and Raymie Nightingale. She is also the author of the Mercy Watson series and other early chapter books, and a number of picture books and other novels. Her newest novel, Beverly, Right Here (coming out in September) blends honesty, grace and humor to illuminate characters whose connections by happenstance provide a life-altering change in perspective for its 14-year-old protagonist.

·         Friends of the CCBC SUPER Spectacular Fall Book Sale, Saturday, October 19, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m., CCBC Elizabeth Burr Conference Room, 225 N. Mills Street, Room 401, Madison

The Friends will again offer THOUSANDS of new and gently used trade books for children and teens for purchase at bargain prices ($1-$4).   The first hour of the sale is for Friends only. The sale will be open to the public from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.

Payment: We can accept cash, checks, or institutional purchase orders. The Friends that we cannot accept credit cards of any kind.

·         CCBC Hands-on Exhibit at WLA:  The Youth Services Section of the Wisconsin Library Association is again sponsoring a CCBC booth in the WLA exhibit Hall where we will have a preview of 2019 books we’ve already chosen for inclusion in the upcoming edition of CCBC Choices  as well as 2019 picture books that have received starred reviews.  If you’ll be at WLA, be sure to stop by!

·         CCBC Starred Review Hands-On Book Examination Days at the CCBC: Monday and Tuesday, November 11 and 12
The CCBC will set up all of the 2019 books for children and teens we’ve received to-date that have starred reviews in one or more journals. Librarians, teachers and interested others who plan to attend should RSVP to librarian Megan Schliesman: schliesman@education.wisc.edu

CELEBRATE ESPHYR SLOBODKINA’S 100TH BIRTHDAY!!

Esphyr Slobodkina, internationally-renowned artist and author of the classic children’s book Caps for Sale, will be honored in a series of events commemorating her 100th birthday beginning fall 2008. This posthumous celebration remembers a pioneer who was among the first female American artists to explore abstraction and the first to use collage as an illustrational technique in American children’s books.

The Slobodkina Foundation will be providing downloadable Caps for Sale activity kits and program materials to encourage educators to acknowledge and celebrate Esphyr Slobodkina’s centennial. These materials will be available on the Slobodkina Foundation website beginning September 22, 2008 – Esphyr Slobodkina’s birthday.

Lectures, interactive programs, and touring opportunities will be offered concurrently with a traveling art exhibition, Rediscovering Slobodkina: A Pioneer of American Abstraction – the largest and most comprehensive Slobodkina retrospective to date featuring paintings and illustrations on loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This exhibition will premiere at the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, New York in March 2009, and will then travel to the Samuel P. Harn Art Museum and the Naples Museum of Art in Florida.

Welcome to the new YSS Blog

It's come to my attention that I'm not very good at keeping the events section of the YSS website up-to-date. With the redesign of the new website, I'm hoping to avoid that problem with the creation of this blog, but I can't keep it up to date all by myself. Email me events that you think would be of interest to Children, Youth, and Teen librarians around the state and I will post it as soon as possible. Thanks in advance for all your help.
