ALSC Summer Reading Lists

Just in time for summer, ALSC has released their reading lists. Gavin Damore writes,  "It’s that time of year again – Summer Reading! As you’re busy planning for your various programming and activities to keep kids and tweens engaged during school break, be sure to check out ALSC’s 2025 Summer Reading Lists. Every year, ALSC’s Quicklists Consulting Committee compiles and annotates these lists. They provide an easy way to share recommended reads to parents and caregivers during the busiest time of year." 

The lists are available as printable PDFs and are based off age groups, covering birth – ⁠grade 8.

The annual free reading lists for kids preschool- grade 8 from ALA's Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) are here. Compiled by the amazing ALSC Quicklists Consulting Committee, the lists feature books and other digital resources.

Diversity-Celebrating Summer Reading List Available

We're the People, a group of bloggers, authors, academics and publishers, have been working since 2015 to introduce more diversity into Summer Reading lists. Each year's group suggests and closely reads books to "identify microaggressions, cultural misappropriation or examples that negated our struggle for social justice and inclusion."

The recommended books are by and about IPOC (Indigenous and People of Color), people with disabilities and people from the LGBTQ+ community. Each book has at least two readers and is thoroughly discussed, vetted and given second reads.

2017 ALSC Summer Reading Lists

ALSC has posted their 2017 Summer Reading Lists for ages birth - 8th grade!  You can download each list AND they "can be customized to include library information, summer hours and summer reading programs for children before making copies available to schools and patrons."

Titles include: The Lending Zoo (Frank Asch), The Quickest Kid in Clarksville (Pat Zietlow Miller), Unusual Chicken for the Exceptional Poultry Farmer (Kelly Jones), and In the Footsteps of Crazy Horse (Joseph Marshall).
