ALSC Summer Reading Lists

Just in time for summer, ALSC has released their reading lists. Gavin Damore writes,  "It’s that time of year again – Summer Reading! As you’re busy planning for your various programming and activities to keep kids and tweens engaged during school break, be sure to check out ALSC’s 2025 Summer Reading Lists.
Every year, ALSC’s Quicklists Consulting Committee compiles and annotates these lists. They provide an easy way to share recommended reads to parents and caregivers during the busiest time of year."

The lists are available as printable PDFs and are based off age groups, covering birth – grade 8.

Tuesday Tips - Booklists Ideas and Recommendations

Sam Jones is the Youth Services Librarian at the Beaver Dam Public Library. Today she shares a tip on a wonderful resource to be aware of.

The Madison Reading Project is a great organization that provides free books and resources to Dane County and the rest of Wisconsin. On their website, they also have a blog where they post different thematic booklists. They review about ten books but then link to a longer list of titles they would also recommend. Two of my current favorites are:

Inclusive Books to Celebrate and Honor Father Figures This list does a great job at providing books with diverse characters and different family dynamics.

Picture Books for Sharing Planet Earth and Rainbow Craft This summer, my library is doing "Read Beyond the Beaten Path" as a theme and this list has some great examples of books to be used for storytime. Libraries doing the "Ocean of Possibilities" theme could find inspiration in this booklist as well. They even provide a craft idea!

I've been following the Madison Reading Project for a while now, and I love how they are focused on equity and diversity. They also have a Facebook and Instagram page that they frequently update if you are interested in learning more about what they are currently doing for events.

Webinar: Trauma-Informed Education

Using Children’s Books to Approach Trauma-Informed Education was a recent webinar hosted by Lee & Low Books.  The first half of the webinar provides a thoughtful overview of trauma, including important concepts and terminology. The second half dives into specific titles and how they might be used in a classroom setting (which would need to be modified for a public library setting).

You can watch the webinar recording here and check out Lee & Low’s Trauma-Informed Diverse Reading List that showcases child protagonists who cope with trauma in a variety of ways and provide students opportunities to discuss trauma through the lens of a relatable and engaging character.

**Thanks to Amanda Bosky at the Stoughton Public Library who sent this to Tessa and, as always, to Tessa, for sharing so many vital and informative resources with library staff serving youth and families throughout Wisconsin.**

Monarch Library System Hosting Mock Elections for Caldecott, Newbery & Printz Awards 2019

You're invited! Join youth library staff from Monarch Library System, school library colleagues and other library staff serving youth at this exciting one day event.

I've already started my reading and invited my local school library colleagues. Ashley Pike, one of the hosting library's staff, has invited hers. Please consider joining us and inviting your local counterparts, too. If you are interested in attending, please try to register by Monday, November 19.

If you can't make it, the list of titles for consideration makes a great collection development tool. More details including the schedule, information on how to register, and booklists can be accessed here.
