Throw-It Thursday - Where Do the Books Go?

Ashley Borman, Technical Services Librarian at the Clintonville (WI) Public Library, is back with another weeding tips column.

Some people wonder why libraries discard books. Why we can’t just keep everything we buy. Why we need to buy new things all the time. They also want to know what we do with books that we remove from the library. This wonderful post from everylibrary.org was forwarded to me by a friend. It puts into words (better than I could do) the reasons why we discard books and why not everything gets redistributed: “Where do the Books Go After the Library?”

Another great post I found on Medium.com goes into a bit more detail: “What Happens to Old Library Books?” . This article tells a bit more about how circulation can affect the library life of a book. He also talks a bit about how extreme weeding can sometimes cause unwanted media attention. Some good food for thought can be found in this article as well.

If you work in a library and have ever struggled to put into words how we discard items to a non-library person, these articles have some great points to help you out. If you are just a library or book lover and were curious about what we do with the books when they leave our shelves, now you know.

Great Stories Club Grants

The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office is currently accepting applications for the Great Stories Club series on Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation. The theme is "Growing Up Brave on the Margins."
Applications will be accepted from May 15 to July 15, 2019.
The ALA Great Stories Club is a thematic reading and discussion program that engages teens who are facing difficult challenges through literature-based library outreach programs. An expansion of ALA's long-standing Great Stories Club program model, the Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) series will feature books that explore questions of race, equity, identity, and history, and support racial healing sessions with participating libraries, their community partners, and their teen readers. This TRHT series — "Growing Up Brave: Courage and Coming of Age" — is supported by grants from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).
Participating libraries will work with small groups of approximately 10 teens; provide up to four theme-related books for each participant to keep as their own; convene opportunities for exploration and discussion of relevant humanities content among peers; and offer sessions for program conveners and participants led by a racial healing practitioner(s). Book discussions will be led by an experienced programming librarian, often in cooperation with staff from a partner organization or department, such as teachers and counselors.
To be notified about upcoming Great Stories Club offerings, sign up for ALA's Programming Librarian e-newsletter.
All libraries are encouraged to use reading lists, discussion questions, and other resources from previous Great Stories Club themes. All materials are free. To view them, visit our Resources page.
Questions? Contact ALA's Public Programs Office at publicprograms@ala.org.

Stranger Things are Heading Your Way...

If your Tuesday isn't going the way you'd like--and/or you are a Stranger Things fan like me--get ready to turn your frown Upside Down. (See what I did there? *eyebrow waggle*)

Just a few days ago, I read an article on Book Riot about a partnership that was announced between Netflix and Penguin Random House.  The plan?  To publish an assortment of books set in the Stranger Things universe.  (But which one?! ðŸ˜± Meep!)

The first few books (due out in November of this year) will be behind-the-scenes companions and gift books.  As the partnership continues into 2019, however, novels for both adults and young readers will be added to the selection, including a prequel novel about Eleven's mother, written by the fabulous Gwenda Bond.

Is anyone else as excited about this as I am?!?!

Holiday Gift Ideas

Over at Nerdy Book Club, there is a post detailing some cool book box subscriptions and "one-time-onlys" for the young readers in your life. Check out the post here.

And for all you library staffers out there, if you're tired of receiving heart-felt but sometimes useless things from the people you love during holiday or gift-giving, why don't you see if family members would give you a gift of membership to the Wisconsin Library Association or other professional organization you love but pinch pennies to join! WLA costs $50/year plus $3 for every additional $1000 of salary. My mom used to do that for me and I loved her for it! No more bread-making machines or card tables!!

Many youth librarians use Scholastic book sales to add to their collection of books to give away to kids as incentives, prizes and "You've-done-good!"s. They offer stock they are cycling out of their book fairs in May and December.

Be sure to bring your tax-exempt number card (or letter from your municipality) and your credit card or check. They'll provide the books (and boxes) to tote home to your community.

Get all the details here.

We're The People 2016 Summer Reading List

The We're The People blog began in early 2015 when Edith Campbell invited a handful of colleagues who share a passion for children, literacy, and diversity to work with her on a Summer Reading list. Books recommended on the blog are ones written or illustrated by Native Americans or writers/illustrators of color that have withstood a critical review.

Their 2016 Summer Reading List is a great resource for creating your own summer reading book lists, or as a stand-alone resource to share with families at your library!

Naturalists, Artists, Dreamers: ROW May 2016

Check out the May titles from Read On Wisconsin!

The Story of Owen: The Dragon Slayer of Trondheim is one of my favorites from this month's ROW list, with dragons placed in a modern setting and an intriguing discussion of bards as chroniclers.

Yarn Bombing with Preschoolers!

Check out the cool blog post on Library As Incubator about yarn-bombing with preschoolers!

As an extension of Extra Yarn (Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen's Caldecott-Honor book), Rebecca Dunn recommends having kids create yarn magic wands out of sticks (from the ground) and yarn (from your basket of extra yarn you have hanging around).  The results are wonderful!

Teen Top Ten Voting Open!

Teen readers between the ages of 12 and 18 can vote online for their favorites from this year’s list of nominated titles from now through September 15th. The books nominated for the list were selected by teen book groups from around the country (this is something your teen book group could do, too!)  The resulting Teens' Top Ten will be announced during Teen Read Week, the third week in October. You can find an annotated list and a book trailer of the nominees as well as tips for promoting the Teens’ Top Ten to teen readers here.

I am seeing book displays, promotions, book group discussions, challenges to read all the titles nominated...Lots of places to go with this!
