Tuesday Tips - Imposter Syndrome

Sam Jones is the Youth Services Librarian at the Beaver Dam Public Library. She shares tips to make your job easier in her Tuesday posts.

A while back, I listened to a Library Leadership podcast titled Managing Imposter Syndrome with Erin Collier-Plummer that was really interesting and helpful to listen to. Back in the beginning of 2022, I was still at UW Madison's iSchool and we were talking about imposter syndrome in a class. It was mentioned how common it was to feel like an imposter in the field, and I kind of brushed it off.

Fast forward a few months, I was in a completely new job and environment doing something that I hadn't done before (besides the three to four months during my practicum). Imposter syndrome definitely kicked in. Ways I combated it, like viewing it as an exciting opportunity and having a great support system at my library, were mentioned in the podcast. There was also advice that I could use when imposter syndrome kicks in, like writing down five things I know I can do. Overall, the podcast was a good reminder that this happens to a lot of other people and that there are ways you can try to combat it.

Charlotte Zolotow Lecture Link

CCBC Director KT Horning writes:

"If you missed the Charlotte Zolotow Lecture by Christopher Myers last week, either live or via livestreaming, you can now watch an archived video of it. If you want to use captions, you can just click on the CC underneath the video in the center next to the volume bar.

A Mystery to Me, one of Madison's independent bookstores sold Chris's books at the lecture, and they did have him sign some of their remaining stock after the lecture.  If you would like to get an autographed book, you can inquire about getting one by contacting them directly.

We are also happy to announce next year's Charlotte Zolotow Lecture.  Since this will be the 25th anniversary of the Lecture, we want to honor Charlotte's career as both an author and an editor, so we have invited Alivina Ling, vice president and editor-in-chief at Little, Brown, and award-winning author/editor Grace Lin.  If you are not familiar with Grace and Alvina's wonderful podcast Book Friends Forever (BFF) about their working lives, their longtime friendship (since childhood!), and the children's book world, I encourage you to start listening.  A couple of us at the CCBC are absolutely addicted to it, and it's been called "The Ted Lasso of Publishing Podcast World."  We think that's an apt description.

Here's a link to their podcast. "

Podcasts for Youth Librarians

Recently,  Lindsey Krabbenhoft one of the Jbrary bloggers published a helpful resource of podcasts perfect for those of us in youth services.

Lindsey writes: "I focused on podcasts that are (mostly) active, but there are some wonderful archived podcasts out there like Zero to Three’s Little Kids, Big Questions and The Early Childhood Research Podcast. I’ve broken down my choices into categories – please let me know if I missed any of your favourites!"

She annotates each of over 20 podcasts listed and divides them into broad categories: storytime and programming; reader's advisory; preschool and early childhood education; child development and parenting.

In addition she links to other library-related podcasts for you to check out. Check out the Jbrary post here!

Book Women - A Podcast Sharing Indigenous Stories

Three Canadian librarians are giving a voice to marginalized groups through the power of podcasting!  Book Women podcast encourages other Indigenous peoples to write, edit, and publish their own stories, while also highlighting lesser-known aspects of Canadian history.

“It’s about Indigenous ideas of publishing and libraries and how we tell stories in different ways,” Lar-Son said. “But, it branches out from books in so many ways. A lot of our guests come from different backgrounds. Students, published authors, even a burlesque performer.”

"We have a large pool of really talented people that we know in our circles and we should lift them up. There are many different ways people can tell stories, we just need to hear about how they got into what it is that they do and why they do it,” Laroque said.

She also noted how important it is to have representation in the field.

“We don’t see ourselves in the process. We don’t see ourselves as content creators, because we’re not necessarily featured as such. There’s aren’t a lot of examples for us to lead. If we can pull back the curtain on how Book Women makes things, it really demystifies things."

The Best Podcast Apps For Your Smartphone

A couple weeks ago, over at Review Geek, Jennifer Allen discussed the best podcast apps for your smartphone.  If you are a neanderthal like me you know about Apple Podcasts and maybe Google Play Music if you are an Android user.  (What can I say, I drive a car from the early 2000s and am stuck still rocking burned CDs.)

BUT, as Allen points out:
If you’re not enjoying the wealth of podcasts out there, you’re really missing out. Podcasts provide you with the experience of a radio show—ranging from in-depth information on a wide variety of subjects to light hearted comedy—but are available whenever and where ever you want to listen, if you have a good app to manage them that is.
So, check out her fabulous list and maybe recommend a few to teens or grown-ups at your library!

Just One More Book

Given the important role of family reading and great children's books in a happy, healthy childhood, you may be happy to learn of our wildly successful Children's Book Podcast, Just One More Book ! -- a podcast about the children's books we love and why we love them, recorded in our favourite coffee shop.

"Just One More Book!" is a thrice-weekly podcast which promotes and celebrates literacy and great children's books. Each weekday morning, we take a few minutes out of our morning coffee ritual to discuss one of our many favourite children's books. We also feature weekly interviews with authors, illustrators and experts and enthusiasts in the areas of children's literature and literacy as well as listener-submitted book reviews.

Through this podcast and website, we are building a lively, interactive community linking children's book authors, illustrators, readers (parents, children, librarians, teachers and literacy activists) and publishers.

Busy parents and educators can now discover great read-aloud children's books while they are busy doing the many tasks that would otherwise rob them of the opportunity to research great children's books in more traditional ways.

Our guests have included celebrity authors such as Sheree Fitch, Rachna Gilmore, Jack Prelutsky, Daniel Pinkwater, Eve Bunting, Eva Ibbotson, Henry Winkler and Mary Ann Hoberman and celebrity illustrators such as Mo Willems, Bob Staake, Marc Brown, Oliver Jeffers, Simon James, Jane Ray, Wallace Edwards and Kevin Hawkes. We have also aimed the spotlight at interesting and lesser known authors and illustrators.

Episodes range in length from 5 to 25 minutes and can be played directly from our web page or downloaded to a portable mp3 player, such as an iPod, for listening on the go.

This podcast is powered by passion. We have no advertisers or sponsors.
Our goals are to link children with great books and to help create happy memories for children and the adults that read to them…and to have fun!

The Just One More Book! Podcast has been recommended by the American Library Association as one of its 2007 American Library Association (ALA) - Great web sites for kids and has been featured in Canadian Living Magazine and such prestigious literary publications as School Library Journal, Books for Keeps and Publishers Weekly. We are also regular contributors to ChildsLife, The Edge of the Forest and Parent Source online newsletters. Watch for us this July in Parenting Magazine.
