Mini-Golf Reader's Cup - Creating Community Fun

Lynn Christiansen, Youth Associate at Manitowoc Public Library, shares this fun program!

The Manitowoc Public Library Youth Department recently hosted The Reader Cup, a nine hole mini golf event, as one of our regular Family Activity Night programs.

We are fortunate to have Madison, a high school intern, working with our department for 12 hours a week throughout the school year. I provided her with the basic ideas I had been considering, and then let her loose to use her creativity and pretty much whatever materials she could find in the department to construct each hole. We ended up with 9 themed areas, including dinosaurs, construction, trains, and even a glow-in-the-dark hole (by far the participant favorite.) The numbered holes were set up throughout the department, along with theme-related books which participants were encouraged to check out. Each group was given a printed scorecard (I used this one, but edited out the K’nex text - see link below) in case they wanted to keep track of their scores. We had previously purchased the mini golf sets through Amazon. They are currently unavailable, but I’ll include a link below for informational purposes.

Pre-registration was required for the event. We staggered start times every 10 minutes over 1.5 hours, and had 36 participants play through the course – some more than once! We will definitely do the program again, and I am hoping to work with our Teen Associate to see if we could get some teens involved in the planning and building aspect of it.
