Just Wondering - To Program or Not to Program?

This month's column by Manitowoc (WI) Public Library Youth Librarian and YSS Board Member Susie Menk explores questions about whether and how we program during the ongoing pandemic
. And she's wondering....what do you think?

The COVID pandemic has certainly put a halt to many of our programs and I know all of us are struggling with what we can offer.  Do we offer programs in our storytime rooms or corners?  It’s been great having storytime outside or on the lawn, but the weather is definitely getting colder, so now what?  What can we offer that will be inviting while still keeping our staff and the public safe?  It’s certainly a conundrum.

Manitowoc Public Library offered some programs this past month for the community and we had people come in spades!  For the second time, we coordinated a Trunk or Treat event and held it in conjunction with a Teen Haunted House.  Area agencies and businesses signed up for a spot in our parking lot and a chance to share their services (and candy of course) with members of the community.  We had about thirty different groups set up their trunks and interact with families, sharing candy and information with over a thousand people in an hour and a half.

During this time, our teen associate and her helpers were running a haunted house inside the library.  Groups signed up ahead of time and went through the haunted house in five minute intervals.  The haunted house was meant for teens, but younger ones could go through as long as they had an adult with them.  With dim lights, hanging blankets and many spooky silhouettes, those who ventured inside had a terrifying time!  The best part was generating interest from several teens who are new to our teen programs.  They dressed up, put on make-up and were eager to help.  Now they can’t wait for the next teen event.

After enjoying the Trunk or Treat event and going through the Haunted House, families could then walk upstairs to the Youth Department for treats and a chance to warm up on a chilly night.

With people seeming to come out in droves, the public is ready for library programs.  How do we respond? Do we continue to offer in-person programs during the winter?  What is your library offering?  Are people in your community rejoining your programs?  What’s working for you?
