Six Seven

I'd like to share a story with you. Through a wonderful continuous donation, our library is able to invite every second grade student in our school district to come to the library for a field trip. They get a special wallet, can get a library card, spend an hour with us learning about the library, and hopefully leave with a few new favorite books. During one of these visits we had three classes visiting at once. Now, I was standing in front of the room, doing some quick math in my head to figure out how many students there were in the room. There were two classes with 23 students and one with 21. I proudly said to these kids, "there are 67 of you visiting the library today." They absolutely lost it! They spent a full minute doing the whole 6 7 hand thing. They were so fast, I didn't stand a chance. And, let me tell you, I don't think they'll ever forget that visit. Honestly, neither will I.

In an article from Torrey Maldonado, he says, "my saying 'six seven' was a unifier." And, he's so right. The kids in that room were unified, and the fact that I just took it all in, unified me with them as well. Maldonado goes on to say, "using 'six seven' can take us into common ground with young people." He encourages adults to use it, and he himself uses it in both his teaching and writing. Could creating a connection with a child be as simple as this nonsense slang term? Maybe not, but it's a start.

The Genius Files: Turkey Turkey!

Image by Jenny Toms from Pixabay

Kate Davis, YSS Board Member and Programming Consultant for the Prairie Lakes Library System has introduced a new new email blast for her library system called The Genius Files. Here's Genius Files #5, focused on Thanksgiving/Turkey themed storytime.

Today's Genius Files was inspired by my 3 year-old grandson, Benji, as he wiggled and danced through our Target run yesterday singing, "I believe in the turkey in me!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 On our way home, his mama played the song "Turkey Turkey" for me so I could hear where these crazy lyrics were coming from. Turns out that it is one of the BEST Thanksgiving songs I've heard in years, so I had to share with you all! (I've also added some other super fun, Thanksgiving storytime favorite songs for you!)

Looking for more rhymes, fingerplays, songs, book suggestions, and craft ideas for your Thanksgiving storytime? Here you go!

The Librarian's Desk

What does your desk look like? Are you a tidy desk person, with everything in its place? Does it look like something exploded all over it? No matter what it looks like, I'm sure there are things at your desk that you'd consider necessary for your daily library life. In a blog post for ALSC (Association for Library Service to Children) Jessica Tarnowski lists their 7 must haves at their desk. They say, "I've learned to keep a few 'lifesavers' close by. These little things have rescued me more times than I can count." Their list includes things like tape and scissors, stickers, and colorful pens. Nothing Earth shattering, but still something they consider necessary.

Photo from Katie Ganser
Here are some things I'd put on my list.

  • A variety of fidgets. From my clicky coffee cup to my infinity cube, my fidgets are a daily must.
  • My capybara collection. Who doesn't love a capybara? They make me, and the kids who see them smile.
  • A stash of nice lotion and chapstick. Winter is brutal on the skin in Wisconsin, and I must apply these both multiple times daily!
  • Photos. I have photos of my dog, my husband, library kids, coworkers, friends. Pretty much any photo that makes me happy is a good desk addition in my eyes.
What are your desk must haves?

Don't forget about you this summer!

Photo by Ava Sol on Unsplash
Hey Youth Librarians! How are we? We've made it about half way through the summer, and if you're anything like me, you're exhausted, but loving the chaos and the fun that summer brings in our line of work. Also, if you're anything like me, your work becomes a priority for the summer months, and self-care takes a back seat. Here is your reminder: TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES!!

In an article from the American Library Association, Erika Lehtonen states, "We can be so busy taking care of others, we forget about taking care of ourselves." I have certainly found myself saying, "I don't have time to...(insert any number of things) right now." Summer is busy and it can seem like you can't even find a few minutes to yourself, but remember how important it is to fill your cup. Self-care doesn't have to be big, elaborate, or even take too long. Lounge in a hammock, read a good book, pet your dog, build some legos, have dinner with friends, just make sure you're finding ways and moments to make your care the focus.

To read the tips from ALA visit the article here. [Self-Care: Because You Deserve It. Lehtonen, Erika. American Library Association]
